數字電影是涉及拍攝、膠轉磁、壓縮、編碼、加密、傳輸、顯示等多種技術,集數位化製作、存儲、發行、放映、安全等多個環節於一體的一個完整系統。
數位電影光英文就有好多種稱法，如DIGITAL MOVIE，DIGITAL FILM，DIGITAL CINEMA。從技術上來講，國外用得最多的叫法也就是DIGITAL CINEMA，而用中文翻譯過來，就成了數位影院了。現在也有人把在家中、學校裏自己做的DV也叫DIGITAL FILM。其實，嚴格來講，它既不是電視，也不是電影。
什麼是數字電影？
數位電影(D-Cinema)覆蓋了從採集到攝製、傳輸、存儲和顯示的一系列技術和系統。其目的是提供與目前標準相同或更高解析度的圖像和更好的音效，同時消除電影降級、運輸和盜版的問題，從而代替目前的電影系統。它試圖為觀看電影的人提供與地點無關的穩定電影，確保觀看者真正瞭解導演的意圖。但數字電影並不僅僅在影院受到歡迎。家庭影院已經成為巨大的消費類市場，商業用戶也看到了將其用於公司演示的優勢，同樣的數位電影技術可以在較小的規模上使用。
數位電影的主要推動力是新型顯示技術如德州儀器公司的數位光處理器(DLP)和JVC公司的D-ILA，它們可以提供一直到物鏡投影為止的完全數位圖像。這些提供高清晰度圖像的設備，需要很大的帶寬和處理能力。
與任何新興技術一樣，數位電影還有一系列問題，包括互用問題、缺少標準、內容保護、色度差異、很大的存儲要求以及通過網路進行高帶寬傳輸（無線或有線）。因此，需要靈活、高成本效率的技術才能成功。
